This product is gum rosin. The terms pine resin and colophony are used broadly, much like the term “milk”, but can refer to slightly different substances.

Gum rosin is made by extracting the natural oil from tree sap, using a time-honoured technique of distilling which does not cause lasting damage to the trees. We grind the rosin into powder and package into a robust container suitable to be thrown into a bag and used in dance classes and gymnasiums, for stringed instruments,  even to make environmentally friendly surfboard wax.

We choose to use sustainably farmed pinus merkusii (Sumatran Pine) because it is naturally quite sticky, the little bit of added tack is beneficial when wanting to make beeswax wraps “stick” to items.

This Indonesian rosin is easily the best and highest quality we have found over the past decade and gives consistent results.

Gum rosin is NOT classified as a hazardous or dangerous substance, as per Chemwatch 4054-76. If you are sensitive to the soap products brand name Pinetarsol, you might possibly have a localised skin reaction to the rosin due to direct contact with a pine-based substance.
